Birthday party games on your phone
Every birthday hits the moment when someone says "should we play something?" and nobody wants to download an app, create accounts or read a rulebook. This guide is for that moment: games that start in one minute with the phones already in everyone's pocket.
What you need (spoiler: nothing)
One phone per person with a connection. Nothing to install, nothing to sign up for: one person creates the room in the browser, shares a 4-letter code over WhatsApp or shows the QR, and everyone else is in instantly. Works the same with 4 people or 12.
The main course: Imposter
The social deduction classic, perfect for groups of 3 to 12: everyone gets the same secret word except one player, who has to fake knowing it. Clues in turns, accusations, a vote, and guaranteed laughter when the imposter turns out to be the last person you suspected. Rounds take 5-10 minutes, ideal for chaining several.
For a change of pace: charades
When the group wants to get off the couch, classic charades with decks on your phone: one person acts, the rest guess. Play it free at Charades, from the same team and with the same philosophy: no downloads, no accounts.
Host tricks
- Create the room before announcing it: "get in here" works better than "want to play something?".
- Send the link to the birthday WhatsApp group: you already have one, and the link carries the room code inside.
- Start with a practice round while the cake arrives: rules are understood by playing, not by explaining.
- With more than 7 people, use two imposters: chaos scales better than order.
